2006 USHA National Masters Doubles

USHA National Masters Doubles, Corvallis, Ore.

Mike Panko and Tony Krocak rallied to win the 35-plus doubles over Rich Dunne and Rich Vasquez in a tiebreaker on Sunday. “Gary (Rohrer) told Mike to stay out of my way,” Krocak said of the turnaround.

“I’m not used to the right side,” Panko said of pairing with the lefty Krocak. But the talented duo got their act together in time for the win.

“We’re the 40-plus champs – right?” Dunne said more than asked after the combining of the 35s and 40s.

Kurt Meis got hot at the beginning of the second game and then pulled a groin after Vern and Chris Roberts rallied from an 11-1 deficit to tie the game at 12. “C’mon, let me play,” Jerry Garcia said but Meis couldn’t play a point after the injury.

Glenn Carden was the class of the 50-plus, teaming with Jim Spencer to defeat Tom Fitzwater and Pat Bowen in the 50s.

Rick Harrinton and Robin Peters took the 55 title back to Montana, defeating Washington’s Carl Mattson and Ron Ewing.

Rod Gaspar and Jim Barnett won the Southern California battle over defending champs Mike Kogan and Steve Housman.

Felipe Rosendo and Jerry Schiffman won a tiebkreaker over defending champs Mike Driscoll and Mike Lundy. “That’s the second time I’ve fixed him up” Kevan DelGrande said of his pairing of Schiffman with Rosendo.

DelGrande earned his own title by teaming with Fred Chapman in the 70s. They defeated defending champs Jim Economides and Charlie Wicker for the title.
