161 street 3-wall 2004Seattle--The 21st. annual 161st St. Three Wall Handball Tournament was held on July 24th. We changed the format this year to doubles instead of the singles event that has been held for the past 20 years. We had 11 teams who played out to 5 places and received engraved mugs denoting their finish position. This is a handicapped tournament, with levels from A1 to D3. Colin Clement and Mike Ewing, playing as A3’s, defeated Bill Hayes and Steve Stanich, also A3’s, to take the 1st place trophy. Clement and Ewing had to work their way back to the finals from the losers bracket due to an early loss to Hayes and Stanich . Clement and Ewing had to defeat Hayes and Stanich in two games in the finals, since Hayes and Stannich had not suffered a loss prior to the final match. The surprise team in the tournament was Mike Bennett and his son Max. Max has improved immensely and I think we’ll see a few tournament trophys heading his way in the future, Special thanks to Leroy Gmazel for the fine liquid refreshments, Larry Lenning for his generosity, and Steve Stanich and Greg Bellinger for the great turkey, steak and chicken. The results were as follows: 1st- Colin Clement/Mike Ewing , 2nd – Bill Hayes/Steve Stanich, 3rd- Larry Hoff/Pete Halfaker, 4th- Mike Bennett/Max Bennett , 5th- Sean Lenning/Christian Santos.
